Fred N. Blitt

FRED N. BLITT is managing partner of the law firm of Blitt and Gaines, P.C. whose main office is located in Vernon Hills, IL. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1985 and his Juris Doctor degree from The John Marshall Law School in 1988. Fred founded the firm in 1990.

Fred is a Past President of the National Creditors Bar Association, a Washington, D.C. based trade association representing the nation’s best debt collection attorneys. Fred is a founding member of the Creditor’s Bar Coalition of Illinois, an organization designed to work with our lobbyist in Springfield, Illinois (state capital) to review and develop laws and regulations specific to our industry.

Fred is licensed in the state of Illinois and the Northern District of Illinois and the United States Supreme Court.  He is also a Certified Public Accountant.

Jan B. Gaines

JAN B. GAINES is a Partner of the law firm Blitt and Gaines, P.C. whose main office is located in Vernon Hills, IL. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1982 and her Juris Doctor degree from The John Marshall Law School in 1987.  Jan joined the firm in 1995. She is licensed to practice in the state of Illinois and before the Northern District of Illinois. Jan has been a guest lecturer at The John Marshall Law School.

Jan’s affiliations include the National Creditors Bar Association; Illinois Creditors Bar Association; Creditors Bar Coalition of Illinois and Receivables Management Association International. 

David Olefsky

DAVID OLEFSKY is a Partner and Chief Operating Officer of the law firm Blitt and Gaines, P.C. whose main office is located in Vernon Hills, IL. BARBARA NILSEN is a Partner and Chief Compliance Officer of the law firm Blitt and Gaines, P.C. whose main office is located in Vernon Hills, IL. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2002 and her Juris Doctor degree from The John Marshall Law School in 2005.  Barb joined Blitt and Gaines, P.C. in 2015.

Barb is the President and a member of the Executive Committee of the National Creditors Bar Association, a Washington, D.C. based trade association representing the nation’s best debt collection attorneys.  She is licensed to practice law in the states of Illinois and Missouri and the Northern District of Illinois.

Rachel Blitt Auerbach

RACHEL AUERBACH is a Partner of the law firm Blitt and Gaines, P.C. whose main office is located in Vernon Hills, IL. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and Entrepreneurship from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2016 and her Juris Doctor degree from The John Marshall Law School in 2021. Rachel joined Blitt and Gaines, P.C. in 2017.

Rachel is licensed to practice law in the state of Illinois and her many affiliations include the National Creditors Bar Association; Illinois State Bar Association; Illinois Creditors Bar Association; Creditors Bar Coalition of Illinois.

Michael L. Starzec

MICHAEL L. STARZEC is a partner of the law firm of Blitt and Gaines, P.C. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science at Northern Illinois University in 1992 and his Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University, College of Law in 1995.  

Michael is the President Emeritus of the Illinois Creditors Bar Association, a state bar association comprised of creditors rights attorneys.  Michael is also a member of the Creditor’s Bar Coalition of Illinois.  He is or has been a member of several Illinois Supreme Court Access to Justice Initiative committees, representing the creditors’ perspective.   He is the author of the IICLE publication Credit Card Litigation, has written for the Loyola Consumer Law Review and is a frequent presenter for national and state bar associations.  In 2021, he was jointly recognized by Chief Justice Burke in assisting consumers during the COVID-19 court closures.

Michael is licensed to practice law in the states of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin as well as both the Northern District of Illinois and the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Christopher Low

CHRISTOPHER LOW is a Partner in the law firm Blitt and Gaines, P.C., whose main office is located in Vernon Hills, IL. Chris received his B.A. from the University of Iowa in 1998, and his Juris Doctor degree from Drake University Law School in 2001. Chris practiced creditors’ rights law at Abendroth and Russell, P.C., in Des Moines, IA from 2001 through July 31, 2016 before joining Blitt and Gaines, P.C. on August 1, 2016. Chris practices primarily in Iowa.

Chris’ memberships and affiliations include the Iowa State Bar Association, the State Bar of Wisconsin,  the  State Bar of Arizona, and the National Creditors Bar Association (NCBA) (Member Grievance Committee). Honors and Awards include: Super Lawyers – Rising Star 2014

Jennifer L. Shipman

JENNIFER SHIPMAN is a Partner at Blitt and Gaines, P.C. She earned her MBA from Wichita State University and her Juris Doctor from Washburn University, and has been practicing law in the Collections Industry for approximately 15 years. Throughout her career, Jennifer has demonstrated leadership and commitment to the profession, including serving as the President and Secretary of the Kansas Creditor Attorney Association.

Originally from Kansas, Jennifer now resides in Colorado with her family. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys hiking, snowboarding, and spending time outdoors with her loved ones.

Jesse G. Bernstein

JESSE BERNSTEIN is a Partner of the law firm Blitt and Gaines, P.C, whose main office is located in Vernon Hills, IL. Jesse received his B.A. from Michigan State University in 2003, and his Juris Doctor degree from the Michigan State University College of Law in 2006. Before joining Blitt and Gaines in 2018, Jesse mainly focused on corporate contracts.

Jesse’s licenses include the State Bar of Illinois (2007), the State Bar of Indiana (2025), as well as the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois, Central District of Illinois and Southern District of Illinois. He is also an active member of the Illinois Creditors Bar Association and the National Creditors Bar Association.

Originally from the Metro Detroit area in Michigan, Jesse now resides in the Chicago area with his family.

Elizabeth J. Schweiger

ELIZABETH J. SCHWEIGER is a Partner of the law firm Blitt and Gaines, P.C. and currently runs the Milwaukee, Wisconsin office.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2005, and her Juris Doctor degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2010.   Elizabeth joined Blitt and Gaines, P.C. in 2016.

Ellizabeth is licensed to practice law in the state of Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Arkansas.  She is also licensed in the tribal courts of Forest County Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Lac Courte Oreilles, Lac Du Flambeau Bank of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Oneida, St. Croix Chippewa Indians, and Sokaogon Chippewa.  Her many affiliations include the National Creditors Bar Association; Wisconsin Creditors’ Rights Association, Inc.; and Association for Women Lawyers.
